Incineration of waste results in some 25-30% of Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA). IBA is a rich source of materials that can be recovered. Utilizing this resource is what members of FIR do. A small but very valuable constituent of IBA is metal. Ferro and non-ferrous metals are recovered by such techniques as magnets and eddy current separators. The inert, mineral part of IBA can be processed into aggregates that are fit for use in road construction and in special cases also in concrete. There is a vast amount of experience in such countries as Germany and The Netherlands.
