C&DW contains both inert and non-inert fractions. The inert fraction is most abundant. It is mainly processed by sieving and crushing, which results in Recycled Aggregates. Non-inert mixed C&DW is processed in sorting plants. In sorting plants materials such as wood, metals, plastics and glass are recovered. The remaining fraction can be further processed to produce Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF).

In FIR countries Quality Assurance schemes are developed which guarantee the good quality and the environmentally safe way of application. Recycled Aggregates meeting the requirements of these Quality Assurance schemes are considered to be products and not as waste in many Member States.
